Entrepreneur's Initiative: Non-genetically modified (GM) is renamed "Natural Gene"

On October 10, at the 14th Preparatory Meeting of China Brand Agricultural Products Alliance, a joint initiative of 100 experts, scholars and agricultural entrepreneurs from China named "non-GMO" as "natural gene".


Han Zhihui, one of the initiators of China Brand Agricultural Products Alliance and the director of the Alliance Brand Committee, took the lead in launching the initiative at the conference. In his speech, Mr. Han Zhihui said that in order to protect the 1.4 billion Chinese consumers'right to know and choose and to better understand and scientifically understand GM technology and products, the China Brand Agricultural Products Alliance issued an initiative to rename "non-GM" as "natural gene".



     

In his initiative, Mr. Han Zhihui proposed that we should respond positively to the spirit of President Xi's speech: "On the issue of GM, we should be bold in research and prudent in promotion. The industrialization and commercialization of genetically modified crops should be carried out in strict accordance with the technical rules and regulations formulated by the state, be stable and stable, and ensure that no mistakes are made, and safety-related factors should be taken into account. We will resolutely resist any illegal planting, illegal testing, illegal promotion, illegal use, misleading and deceiving consumers in the name of "science".


The initiative proposed that we should actively promote high-value natural genes of agricultural products and food, so that consumers can better understand, no longer labeled as "non-GMO", but unified labeling as "natural genes".


Nowadays, non-GM and GM foods are available on the market, but most consumers can't tell which is GM and which is non-GM. Huang Dafang, a member of the National Committee on Agricultural Transgenic Biosafety, said last year that "most people in China have eaten genetically modified food". Obviously, due to the controversy about the safety of GM food, the vast majority of people do not eat GM food deliberately, but eat it in a confused way without knowing it at all. Take edible oil as an example, most businesses usually label "non-GMO" very clearly on product packaging, with very large text, even the advertising slogan is "100% non-GMO". On the packaging of GMO, the label "GMO" is not clear and the text is very small. The main purpose is to deceive those careless consumers, which not only violates consumers'right to know, but also damages consumers' right to choose. As a result, some consumers are confused when they see "GM", and even more sensitive to the three words "GM".


The existence of genetically modified food is much earlier than that of genetically modified food for tens of millions of years. In the development of human civilization for thousands of years, people have been eating "non-GM" until 1994, when the world's first GM tomato was commercialized, and "GM food" was able to enter the general public. It is precisely because of the "genetically modified" technology, the production of "genetically modified" food, people in order to distinguish from the previous "non-genetically modified" to create a new word "non-genetically modified".


"No" contains many meanings: "wrong, wrong, bad, bad" and so on. A "non" word separates a category. First "mainstream" followed by "non-mainstream", first "official" followed by "non-official"... So, first there is "GM" and then there is "non-GM"? That's wrong!


Natural genes have existed since ancient times. They are endowed by nature. They are pure natural and green. Why should natural genes be falsely replaced by non-GMOs because of the appearance of "GMOs"? From this point of view, "non-GMO" is the most absurd name in history!


Han Zhihui said that the reason why he advocated correcting the name of "natural gene" is to make people more scientifically understand that "non-GM" is "natural gene", which is a great good thing for people's food safety. "Natural Gene" food as human food, people have been eating for thousands of years. When people talk about "genetically modified" color change, they should conform to public opinion and rename "non-genetically modified" as "natural gene".


All foods sold on the market should not only be labeled "genetically modified", but also be clearly labeled with or without genetically modified ingredients. It also needs to label "natural genes". In view of the fact that there are many genetically modified agricultural products and food related to genetically modified organisms, it is suggested that all foods should be labeled in two categories, one is "genetically modified" and the other is "natural gene", and the compulsory detection of genetically modified organisms is to guarantee the consumers'right to know and the consumers' right to choose.
