Release Time:2014-06-26

According to Voice of China's National News Broadcasting, the Chinese ocean-going scientific research vessel Xiangyanghong 09 today embarked on the Jiaolong manned submersible from Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, to the Northwest Pacific Ocean to begin its second pilot application voyage.

Liu Feng, commander-in-chief of the second test application voyage of Jiaolong, introduced that the test is divided into three sections: the first section is to carry out environmental and resource investigation and evaluation in the exploration area of cobalt-rich crusts in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, and is expected to return at the end of July for a total of 40 days. The second and third sections will start in late November and will travel to the southwest Indian Ocean polymetallic sulphide resources exploration area and other sea areas, taking 120 days. It is expected to return to Qingdao in mid-March next year.

Liu Feng: This year's voyage is mainly composed of three tasks. The first is to survey the resources and the environment of the target sea area. The second is to train the personnel for operation and support. At the same time, to further optimize the operation procedures. The third is to test our newly developed equipment for Jiaolong.

There are many overlaps between Jiaolong's sea route map and the first pilot application voyage, but the task will be more systematic than the first one.

Liu Feng: This is equivalent to a more detailed survey of the seamounts based on the original dive.
